VS 2005 May CTP Installation Gremlins

When installing the Visual Studio 2005 May Community Technology Preview, there are three key things to remember:

(1) Everything from the VS 2005 March CTP must be uninstalled before starting: MSDN, J#, .Net and VS.

(2) You cannot install the VS 2005 May CTP from DVD. I don't know why, but you have to copy it to a hard disk on your PC or somewhere on your LAN.

(3) After the May CTP .Net Framework has installed it will ask you to restart. Once the machine has restarted, the setup will run automatically but it will fail. You need to manually restart the setup process after this and it will continue on perfectly.

I don't know what the difference is between a hard disk and a DVD install. Maybe it is because of an error in my download of the ISO image. I wrote two DVD's and both exhibit this strange behaviour. If you have experienced this same behaviour, I'd love to hear from you so I can know whether or not this is a recurring problem.

    Sort of true:

    1) very true - Boy was I sorry I tried otherwise

    2) - I had no problem installing it to a dedicated machine from the DVD, and one VPC had no problem. The VPC running on a slower machine couldn't install from DVD.

    3) Sometimes - For some people this happens. On the three 32bit installations I've done, I haven't seen it, but I've heard about it.

On the DVD thing, are you installing it to a VPC? If so, it's probably an issue with that, and not with your burned DVDs. Try sharing the DVD and accessing that share from the VPC instead of mounting the host's physical drive. That worked for me with LH4074.

    Good luck!

(2)No luck here. I tried to copy just the 'Visual Studio' directory and used VPC and install from that directory. But somewhere in the install it is asking me to insert the disk. yikes!

I tried to load the iso image as a drive in Virtual PC but VPC said it was not a valid image. ISOBuster seemed happy to extract all the files to disk, though.

I also had problems with the docs. Rob Caron has a solution: http://blogs.msdn.com/robcaron/archive/2004/05/27/143485.aspx
