Download: Microsoft LightSwitch HTML Client Preview for Visual Studio 2012 (COMING SOON)

Microsoft LightSwitch HTML Client Preview for Visual Studio 2012

Since we announced the HTML client a couple weeks ago, the community has been very anxious to try out the bits (understandably!) so I’m super excited that the release is available today. Please keep up the great conversations and provide us feedback in the LightSwitch HTML Client forum.

The new HTML5 and JavaScript-based client is an important companion to our Silverlight-based desktop client that addresses the increasing need to build touch-oriented business applications that run well on modern mobile devices. With this download you will be able to set up a Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) for evaluation purposes that contains all you need to build, publish, and run touch-centric business applications using LightSwitch. The VHD contains a tutorial to help guide you through the available features. A setup doc is included in the download that contains instructions on how to set up the VHD.

And keep an eye on the LightSwitch Developer Center for more information, videos, articles, etc. as they become available.

Enjoy!

Too bad it still has that clunky designer.  I'd much prefer to just use LightSwitch to gen the default interface and then open up the resulting form(s) in the standard Visual Studio or even Blend designer for any customizing.

Why is this product (which is a mobile product) called "Lightswitch HTML Client" and not "Lightswith HTML Mobile Client"? The word "HTML Client" defaults to "HTML Desktop Client" and your title can be misleading. Using the word "Mobile" will also leaves you room for future "Desktop" version. Just my two cents! ..Ben

Hi Beth! After seeing the demo videos on the HTML client, I noticed that most if not all showed the out-of-browser Silverlight desktop client. This begs the quesiton: Is the in-browser Silverlight client still available as a deployment option in LS 2012? I REALLY hope it prevails. Also, in the advent of Silverlight 5, will the Silverlight-based LightSwitch 2012 client be a Silverlight 5 application? If it will, will there be any option to compile it into a Silverlight 4 application instead? I've written customs controls that works with LightSwitch 2011 (all in SL 4).. I REALLY don't want to re-write or revisit the codes in those controls just because LS 2012 is outputting SL 5 apps! I seriously don't have the time to do so. Hope you can help clarify these matter for me. Thanks!

Hi Beth, Saw this in the keynote and session at TechEd Europe and really excited to try it out. But would prefer to instal and IDE extension than download as a VHD. Any idea if and when this might be available? Thanks, Mark.

@Beth, just watched the Early Look... on channel9. I am not quite sure about the statement that the LS HTML Client is solely for viewing purposes. I think that it is VERY important for data input at least through a camera - think about photo capture and barcoding, for an inventory app as an example. Since jquery mobile supports such options ( I think about PhoneGap Media Capture API), I would like to ask - would such coding be possible, or is there some design restriction within LightSwitch? Thanks for any advice!
