Word 2010 switches to Draft view from Print Layout view when the computer is left idle for a couple of minutes

Some Word2010 users reported an interesting issue:

You are viewing a document (with reviewing turned on) in Print Layout view, and after a few minutes, the view switches to Draft view and opens the comments window on the bottom. It usually happens when the computer is left idle for a
couple of minutes or sometime seconds.

Resolution:

Please verify EndNote X5 add-on is installed with Word2010. Try following methods:

1.  Start in Word in safe mode (hold the CTRL key while starting word).

2.  Disabled cite while you write - in endnote x5 tab, click the arrow on the bottom right of 'bibliography' -> instant formatting tab -> turn off.

This really is annoying, switching off 'cite while you write' is not an option for me. I hate it when I always have to switch back the views AND find where I was in my document, since for me it always jumps back to the home position of the document. This should be addressed, since I am not alone here, several colleagues also see this behavior but they suffer silently...

I don't seem to be able to access the Endnote x5 tab while in safe mode, so this fix isn't helping.

I agree with KGT.  When I open word 2010 in safe mode, the endnote x5 tab isn't event there.  For me, this problem seems to occur more when track changes is turned on.   This is VERY annoying and wastes a lot of my time.  Starting to detest Microsoft products and switch.

Safe mode removes the endnote x5 tab from the ribbon, so we're unable to "turn off" instant formatting. Is this issue being investigated or just dropped?

I have the same problem and agree, it seems to be an EndNote problem. In Word I went into "Options", "Add-Ins" and manage "COM-Add-ins" as well as "Word Add-ins" and disabled active EndNote options. This removed the EndNote Add-In in Word and solved the problem. But as MRIMan writes, disabling EndNote is not always an option....

I found that when I change the preference of the Endnote in Word - it delays this problem. I changed the "cite while you write" preferences to "scan for temporary citations every" X seconds. It switches every time you it scans for temporary citations - so if you put 600 seconds - it will switch only once every 10 minutes

I use X4 and it does the same thing to me.  It is pretty annoying...mostly because I'm writing my thesis so when I get it to switch back it moves to the very first word and I lose my place in an 80 page document....ugh. Guess I'll try switching preferences.

For those of us who need to have EndNote open at all times (e.g. writing a thesis, hence suffering with referencing) I think Moran's option is the best. Maybe 600 seconds is too often. I'm trying 1800 (half an hour). Thanks for all the input and good luck to all!

I wonder if my problem is slightly different than yours, but like everyone else, turning of EN CWYW is not an option.  However, I am pretty sure that this only happens when you leave your cursor in a comment bubble.  If i can manage to remind myself not to sit in a comment, I don't have this problem. It's not a fix, but a work-around...

I have to agree with other posters that the proposed solutions are awful, and even now that EndNote is on X6, this hasn't been fixed. The real solution is to move to Office 2013 (available as a preview download now). It has a reference manager built in - we no longer need EndNote.

Thanks kbk - it is Track Changes that is causing the problem.  I have the EndNote 6 add-in, and have determined that this behavior (switching to draft view and cursor jumping around) occurs only when I have Track Changes enabled.

Same problem here with Endnote X4 and Word 2010 in a Windows 7 machine. Track Changes on and Comment bubbles open, then left idle seems to do it. Switching off Endnote is not an option and having the view changed, and moved to the beginning of the document is tedious in the extreme. Only workaround seems to be not to dally when making comments on a document.

A tips to all: If you mark a word at your current position before you switch back from "Draft" to "Print layout" it will not jump to the start of the text.

For those who don't use endnote, try to run regedit and change the following (e.g. change word to word_old): HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0Word HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOfficeWord HKEY_LOKAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0Word HKEY_LOKAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftOfficeWord It worked perfectly for me until I realised that this somehow overwrote my Endnote Cite while you Write. Once I reinstalled Cite while you Write the same problem as all of you have reoccured.  Very disturbing indeed.

I don't even have track changes enabled and word doesn't need to be left idle for long. I read a bit of a document, turn around, look back and the thing has switched to draft view again. And the thoughts of using Word with EndNote again... please shoot me. The word combination ever! Switch to... retry... switch to... retry... CRASH CRASH CRASH. Complete rubbish

Seriously getting annoyed with this now. Track changes are not turned on! I am just reading a document and adding comments. "Enable background repagination" unchecked!" Autosaving turned off. Still keeps changing to draft view every couple of minutes so I cannot see my comments as I write them and if I change back to Print Layout it goes back to the beginning of the document and I have to scroll down to find where I am again. Honestly, the more I use microsoft products (which so often seem to be simply repackaged versions of the last release with a different GUI) the more I am being driven away by stupid things like this. FYI, Windows 8 made me by a Mac after using windows since 3.0.

I am using office 2013 and had the same problem. After seeing the discussion here yesterday, I turned off automatic citation update in Word's EndNote tab. I've never had the same issue after that. Now after I insert a citation, I just click the 'update citations and bib' button manually, which does not really give me more trouble than the previous problem.

btw, you don't have to go into safe mode at all. All I did was turning off automatic citation update, and it worked well.

All - changing the option to OFF on the tab you get when clicking on the small arrow at the bottom right of in the Word10 EndNote Tab as described by for each document that I open, seems to have resolved the problem for me using MSWord10 and EndNote X6 with Windows 7. I did not have to start Word 10 in safe_mode, but just made the change it as described by danma.

IMPORTANT NOTE: EndNote allows you to set this parameter for EVERY Word document and may automatically turn this on when you create a new document depending on your CWYW preferences. Two suggestions:
    1) If it is happening again, you need to check this setting for the document you are using, especially when editing documents from others.
    2) To prevent this from being turned automatically in your own new documents, turn off the "Instant Formatting" feature by unchecking the "Enable Instant Formatting" option on the "General" tab in EndNote [EndNote Library Screen] in the top menu under ; ;

I still think EndNote should address this issue by fixing it in their CWYW implementation but in the mean time this works for me. Hope this works for others too.

My Apologies - The published comment removed many of the instructions because I used a greater-than, less than sign to indicate the selection. Below I hope is the full instructions.

All - changing the [Instant Formatting] option to OFF for each document that I open seems to have resolved the problem for me using MSWord10 and EndNote X6 with Windows 7, as described by [danma_ 13 Nov 2011 9:33 PM]. To get to the [Instant Formatting] tab clicking on the small arrow at the bottom right of [Bibliography] in the EndNote Tab in the open Word document. I did not re-start Word 10 in safe_mode, but just made the change in the open document.

IMPORTANT: EndNote allows you to set this parameter independently for EVERY Word document and may automatically turn this on when you create a new document depending on your CWYW preferences. Two suggestions:

    1) If it starts to happen again, you need to check this setting for the document you are using, especially when editing documents from others.

    2) To prevent this from being turned automatically in your own new documents, turn off the "Instant Formatting" feature by unchecking the "Enable Instant Formatting" option on the "General" tab in EndNote [EndNote Library Screen] in the top menu under [Tools]; [CWYW]; [CWYW Preferences]

I still think EndNote should address this issue by fixing it in their CWYW implementation but in the mean time this works for me. Hope this works for others too.

In the Endnote tab, look at the preferences. Under "General", uncheck the "Enable Instant formatting on new Word documents". This means that Endnote will no longer automatically reformat the text every time you add a new reference, instead, it will put a tag in the place where you put the reference. When you want to format the references, go to the Endnote tab and click on "Update citations and bibliography".

You can turn of cite while you write with Word in normal mode- you can still insert references, and just ask Endnote to update and create the bibliography at the end of each session, when you've finished working for that day...

I don't have Endnote installed at all and it happens to me. Also we should try to avoid fixing software problems with work arounds. What if we need to cite while we write? People have been reporting this problem in this post alone since Jan 2012. It is now October 2014 and I am still having the same problem. Can't someone just fix the bug?

Single-Mode fibre cable television solely offers just one setting regarding distribution, 1 wavelength regarding light-weight a single fibre center. As a result there's no interference or maybe overlap between distinct wavelengths regarding light-weight to help obstruct data around extended mileage. You can expect to achieve mileage up to 50 instances a lot more than Multi-Mode.

Found the solution. I am not sure why any update in Word would change random settings, but after months of trying various things, I saw that my Word display option "Show vertical ruler in Print Layout view" was checked. I unchecked it, and now I have no reversion to draft view after printing. Can't screen shot here. . . go to Word >File >Options >Advanced >Display, and then uncheck "Show vertical ruler in Print Layout view."

This problem (auto default to draft mode and home screen/page 1) definitely recurs when I leave my cursor in a comment window (I AM using EndNote). I tried the solution suggested by lrlt2000 above and did not solve. Then tried turning off Instant Formatting in EndNote X6, which did one more iteration of default to draft mode, but did not continue to auto-default afterwards. Not sure this will work for all defaulting issues, but at least appears to have fixed one "trigger" in Word.
