o3-mini not supporting Assistants on Azure OpenAI

I have deployed o3-mini on Azure through the AI Foundry. The chat playground works fine with the model. However:

  • The Assistants playground says no compatible models are deployed
  • When using the Assistants API, I get "The requested model 'o3-mini' with engine 'o3-mini-2025-01-31' cannot be used with the Assistants API."

Numerous others mentioned the same thing in this thread: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/2154237/create-assistants-using-o3-mini-using-assistants-a?page=1&orderby=Helpful&comment=answer-1910219#newest-answer-comment

    Hi Colin Harman !

We have noticed that you rated an answer as not helpful. We appreciate your feedback and are committed to improving your experience with the Q&A.

We confirm that O3 is not there for assistant yet as SriLakshmi C mentioned. Azure OpenAI's feature are brought in a different pace because of rigorous tests and synchronization in multiple regions and is different from how OpenAI operates.

You can request the feature in OpenAI feedback forum for PG's attention.

if you have any other questions, please let me know. Thank you again for your time and patience throughout this issue.

    Hello Colin Harman,

Greetings and Welcome to Microsoft Q&A! Thanks for posting the question.

The issue you're encountering with the "o3-mini" model not being compatible with the Assistants API is likely due to service limitations and the fact that the Assistants API only supports specific Azure OpenAI models. The documentation indicates that certain tools and capabilities require the latest models, and "o3-mini" may not fall under the supported models for the Assistants API.

Please refer the list of available models for the Assistants API to ensure that you are using a supported model. If "o3-mini" is not supported, consider using an alternative model that meets the API's compatibility requirements, Supported models in assistant.

I Hope this helps. Do let me know if you have any further queries.
