Microsoft Authenticator iPhone app keeps locking down and becomes unresponsive

My authenticator app is not working. When I open it, it shows an Authenticator locked message and there is no functionality available. Nothing to click or do. I tried deleting the app and re-installing it, I was able to log in with my account email and password and when I did the app was unresponsive. I could not click on anything or do anything. I closed it and when it reopened it showed a black screen. Closing it again a few times and reopening it, returns to the authenticator locked screen.
I went to my account and under security > ways to prove who you are > I deleted the "send sign in notification", I deleted the authenticator app and reinstalled it. After that I was able to sign in successfully and the app is working.
HOWEVER the moment I close the app and restart it, it again returns to the authenticator locked screen
I have read all possible answers and have been unsuccessful so far in resolving this issue.
Can you please assist?
