Using Cube/Tollup or Grouping sets on Azure SQL with BULK Openrowset results in below error. Are these grouping supported for bulk openrowset?

request to perform an external distributed computation has failed with error "assertion failed: physicalplan::extractplan should only be called after optimization is complete."

    Issue:

Using Cube/Tollup or Grouping sets on Azure SQL with BULK Openrowset results in below error. Are these grouping supported for bulk openrowset?

request to perform an external distributed computation has failed with error "assertion failed: physicalplan::extractplan should only be called after optimization is complete."

    Solution:

Under the Synapse Analytics service and discovered that certain GROUP BY options, such as CUBE, ROLLUP, and GROUPING SETS, are not fully supported in the serverless SQL pool within Azure Synapse Analytics. This means that if you're working with advanced aggregation methods like these, they may not function as expected in the serverless environment.

This limitation is documented in the official Microsoft Learn documentation.

    Hello @Erland Sommarskog ,

I asked the same question with Synapse Analytics tag and it seems like GROUP BY OPTIONS are not completely supported in serverless sql. There is also no comprehensive list of functionality not supported in serverless sql pool.
