When trying to promote a new Windows 2016 VM as Domain Controller , it crashes with srv.sys error (with blue screen)

When I demote it , the VM become stable again.

Functional level is 2012

The new DC doesn't have any FSMO role

    Hello

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

The srv.sys error during the promotion to a Domain Controller (DC) can be caused by several factors.

Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot:

    1. Ensure there are no conflicting software applications or services running on the server. Sometimes, third-party software can interfere with the promotion process.
    2. Memory and Hardware Check:

Run a memory test to check for faulty RAM:

    mdsched.exe

Check the health of your hard drive using the chkdsk command:

    chkdsk /f /r

    1. Check the Event Viewer for any related errors or warnings that might give more insight into the cause of the srv.sys error.
    2. If possible, try setting up a new VM from clean installation media, fully patch it, and then attempt to promote it to a DC. Ensure the VM is fully updated before promotion.
    3. Verify that the domain and forest functional levels are compatible with Windows Server 2016. Although you mentioned the functional level is 2012, ensure there are no lingering compatibility issues.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,

    Daisy Zhou
