Hello Team,

I have some questions regarding MS Purview. I have MS 365 E5 License which included E5 Compliance.

If I have to do Data Mapping , Data catalogue etc do I need to deploy anything on azure? Or the license that I have E5 will cover it?

In case I need to deploy on azure how will I be charged as I have checked it asks to create MS Purview account on azure portal and by default it creates a Capacity Unit(1). How will it scale if I am dealing large amount of Data ?Can I tweak number of capacity units in azure portal?

Is there any other charge on top of this CU?

Also in a different scenario If I am dealing with just on prem/3rd party cloud data and I dont have any E5 or E5 compliance data. Can I just deploy MS purview capacity unit and get all the features of E5 compliance OR do I also need to get E5/E5 compliance license on top of CU in azure?

    Hi @BHOLA
    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A platform.

Thank you for your questions about Microsoft Purview. Let me address each one for you:

If I have to do Data Mapping , Data catalogue etc do I need to deploy anything on azure? Or the license that I have E5 will cover it?

The Microsoft 365 E5 license does include certain features related to compliance and governance, such as Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention (DLP) and Information Protection, but for a comprehensive data governance solution like Purview (Data Catalog, Data Mapping, etc.), you would need to deploy it in Azure. While E5 licensing covers some compliance features, it does not cover the full deployment of MS Purview, which requires setting it up in the Azure portal.

Scaling and Charges in Azure with MS Purview Capacity Units

When you create a Microsoft Purview account in Azure, it will indeed provision a Capacity Unit (CU) by default. This CU is the resource that manages the data cataloging, classification, and other governance tasks. If you are dealing with large amounts of data, you can scale the capacity units. You can modify the number of capacity units through the Azure portal to accommodate your data's size and processing needs.

To scale, navigate to the "Microsoft Purview" service in your Azure portal, where you can adjust the number of CUs as needed. Charges are based on the number of CUs you provision, and additional units can be added depending on your workload.

Is there any other charge on top of this CU?

Besides the capacity units, there could be other charges based on data processing activities, such as:

    • Data scanning and classification tasks
    • Data transfer between different regions (if applicable)
    • Other Azure services that integrate with Purview

It’s important to keep an eye on the Azure pricing calculator for a detailed breakdown of all possible costs.

Scenario Without E5 or E5 Compliance License

If you are dealing with only on-premises or third-party cloud data and don’t have an E5 or E5 compliance license, you can still deploy Microsoft Purview on Azure using the Capacity Unit. However, certain compliance and governance features available under the E5 license, such as advanced DLP, compliance score, and information governance, would require the E5 compliance license.

Without an E5 or E5 compliance license, you will not be able to access all the advanced features but can still benefit from basic data governance capabilities.

Hope this helps. Do let us know if you any further queries.
