How to Recover Microsoft Account Without Access to Authenticator App?

Details:

I am unable to access my Microsoft Teams university account because I have forgotten my password and two-step verification (MFA) is enabled. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to the Microsoft Authenticator app, which is required for authentication.

What I’ve Tried:

  • Attempted to reset my password via Microsoft Password Reset, but it requires MFA approval.
  • Checked for alternative authentication methods (backup email/phone) but couldn't find any linked.
  • Tried signing in on previously logged-in devices, but none are accessible.
  • Looked for account recovery options via Microsoft Account Recovery, but I was unable to verify my identity successfully.

Expected Outcome:

I need guidance on how to regain access to my Microsoft Teams university account without the Authenticator app. If there is a way to reset or bypass MFA through an alternative method, please provide the steps.

Additional Notes:

  • Since this is a university account, should I contact my university’s IT administrator?
  • Is there any way to restore access to my Microsoft Authenticator app if I no longer have the original device?

I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

    Hi @John DoeDC

If you forgot your work or school password or have been locked out of your account, you can use your security info and your mobile device to reset your work or school password.

Please note: Your administrator must turn on this feature for you to be able to set up your information and reset your own password.

If your administrator hasn't turned on the ability for you to reset your own password, you'll see a Contact your administrator link instead of the Get back into your account screen. This link lets you contact your administrator about resetting your password, through either email or a web portal.

If your administrator has turned on the ability:

    1.Start the sign-in process by visiting https://mysignins.microsoft.com

2.At the sign-in screen, select Can’t access your account?

3.Enter your work or school email address or username and then prove you aren't a robot by entering the characters you see on the screen.

    4.Select Next.

5.Select one of the methods to verify your identity and change your password and add the requested information.
