Cannot create Azure account - "we're unable to validate phone number"

I would like to get to know Azure but cannot create an account.

I have a Microsoft account and can log in, no problem.

Then I go to:

https://signup.azure.com/

I try to create a free Azure account, enter my phone number, click on "send SMS" or "Call", but every time I get the message:

"Your phone number cannot be validated".

I can try again, tried another phone number, same message.

Yes, I already triple checked / tried:

  • The country code
  • My phone number
  • SMS or call

Nothing works. I tried to call support and I get redirected to the website (aka ms). Similar tickets refer to Azure support. I cannot get in touch with anyone there either. And I cannot create a ticket there because I don't have an Azure service yet.

This is already taking an hour and several attempts, with no luck of getting any proper support so far. Very frustrating.
