A third-party application called the WinVerifyTrust API, causing the wintrust.dll file to crash. This should have nothing to do with the third-party application. In what scenarios might the WinVerifyTrust API cause a crash?

Well, considering the fact that it is calling TppRaiseInvalidParameter. I would assume that the application is passing an invalid window handle or pointer to WinVerifyTrust.

So unfortunately, unless there is something that indicates otherwise, it is difficult to rule out the third-party application itself.
