Which option in SQL Server 2016 Express setup should be chosen to upgrade from SP1 to SP3? This is an in-place upgrade from SQL Server 2016 Express (SP1-GDR).
What options do you see? As I recall on some screen, you get a choice to select which instances to update, and typically you would select All. Click Next and eventually you will come to the Update button.
Thanks Erland ... I was just about to give up and do an uninstall of SP1 GDR and then install with the SP3 image.
Let me revisit and see what option I get.
And this is the SQL Server 2016 Express Edition I'm working with.
The above would also require DB backups and then restores.

Hm, that is a possible way to go, but maybe not the most convenient. There is a separate install for the Service Pack: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=103440
As for the GDR, I don't think should be an issue here, when you are going to a new Service Pack level. SQL 2016 was the last version to actually have service packs, so the memory is getting a little rusty on this point. (These days, there are only Cumulative Updates.)
