- The device identifier you see in the BitLocker recovery key is not the same as your computer's device identifier. The BitLocker recovery key identifier is a unique ID associated with the specific recovery key generated when BitLocker was activated. This identifier helps you match the correct recovery key to the encrypted drive. It's normal for this identifier to be different from other device identifiers on your computer.
- If you deactivate and then reactivate BitLocker, it will generate a new recovery key with a new identifier. This new recovery key will be associated with the current state of your device at the time of reactivation.
- To ensure you have the correct recovery key, always compare the recovery key identifier displayed on your computer with the one printed or saved. If they match, you have the correct key. If you ever need to regenerate the recovery key, you can do so through the BitLocker management settings.
