Why does Edge reset the default browser to Bing on every update?

Every time edge gets updated, I notice that the default search engine has been changed back to Bing.

Why does this happen?

I'm not very technical, is it impossible to store that data and record what search engine I change it to every time?

Microsoft promotes Bing as part of its ecosystem, and updates sometimes nudge users back to their defaults.

Microsoft owns both Edge and Bing, and they have a business interest in promoting Bing as the default search engine.

You may use a different browser that respects your search engine choice.

    Hello,

This happens because Microsoft Edge is designed to reset certain settings, including the default search engine, to ensure a consistent experience across updates. This helps maintain compatibility and performance with new features and security updates.

If you'd like to keep your preferred search engine, you can only manually change it back after each update. Here’s how:

    1. Open Microsoft Edge and go to Settings.
    2. Select Privacy, search, and services.
    3. Scroll down to Address bar and search.
    4. Choose Manage search engines and set your preferred search engine as default.

    Best Regards,

    Hania Lian

    Hello,

You could try setting the Group Policy for the default search engine. ( Not available on Home Editions)

From the run line enter gpedit.msc. Screen shot shows the setting to enable.
