Check in Check out feature - I don't want this enabled, but it keeps prompting for it & not allowing me to save document.

I have an excel file that has been in use for years. When we get the daily numbers, I open the new document, hit save as & select the file in question. We have Windows 11 and 2023 version of Excel.

No settings have been changed whatsoever but one day it started prompting me to check the document out in order to allow other to see my changes. You can see below where I've inserted screen shots to show the messages. I would select yes and then I get the message that the file is no longer checked out or has been deleted, however it shows checked out in info. I have this feature turned off, and I've never messed with any settings otherwise. No other colleague has been in this document, so I am at a loss as to why I can't get this feature completely OFF. I am the only one who makes edits on a daily basis although others might view from time to time. How do I stop this from checking in & out?

Then another question - if I were to have a document where I'd want to use this feature, how do I get it to work properly? I went into the file to see if I opened it first, if it would allow me to check back in. Nope, that didn't work either - although the top says checked out, when I select check in it gives the same error message.

    Hi @Angela Grater ,

1.To stop this from checking in & out, you need to ensure that this setting is turned off. Here’s how you can do that:

    1. Navigate to the document library in SharePoint.
    2. Go to the library settings.
    3. Under "Versioning Settings," look for the option that requires documents to be checked out before editing and set it to "No."

2.f you're using Excel for the web, you can only check in from the SharePoint document library. Once you're done making changes in the workbook, close the browser tab for the file, switch to the document library, and follow the steps above under "Check in from the SharePoint document library."

If you're using a desktop version of Excel for Windows, you can check in a workbook from within the app.

Select File> Info > Check in.

Add a description of your changes in the Check in dialog box.

    Select OK.

The issue is due to Microsoft removing the ability to save the document through the Excel app. At our facility, we have this document saved to a SharePoint so now the ability to make changes to the file, save as to overwrite the old file, and exit are gone. In order to do this, I must navigate to the SharePoint document library and check in or out from there. Unfortunately, I do not have the ability to turn this feature off. This might be due to administrative settings from the company; however I can say it was not like this 2 months ago. Nobody has made changes to this document or changed settings, so it is all caused from a Microsoft update.
