Connecting a new desktop from an existing desktop to move files and programs You can use the following two methods.
- Using a Local Network (LAN)
Ensure Both Desktops Are Connected: Connect both desktops to the same local network using Ethernet cables or Wi-Fi.
Enable File Sharing: On the desktop that you want to transfer files from (let's call it the "source" desktop), enable file sharing. In Windows, you can do this by right-clicking on the folder you want to share, selecting "Properties," going to the "Sharing" tab, and following the prompts to share the folder.
Access the Shared Folder: On the new desktop (the "destination" desktop), open File Explorer, navigate to the Network section, and locate the shared folder on the source desktop. You should be able to access and transfer files from there.
- Using Remote Desktop Connection (Windows Only)
Enable Remote Desktop on the Source Desktop: In Windows, go to "Settings" > "System" > "Remote Desktop," and turn on Remote Desktop. Note the computer name of the source desktop.
Connect from the New Desktop: On the new desktop, open the Remote Desktop Connection app (usually found in the Start menu under "Windows Accessories"). Enter the computer name of the source desktop and click "Connect."
Authenticate and Access: Provide your credentials to log in to the source desktop remotely. Once logged in, you can access and transfer files as if you were using the source desktop directly.
