No more allocated vCores on Azure For Students Subscription

Hello, I got an azure for students subscription a week ago and Azure Synapse Spark Pool worked just fine with the allocated 12 vCores that come with the subcription. I only used 2$ of credit as of now, but for some reason, since yesterday, new created workspaces have 0 allocated vCores and I cannot run Spark pools anymore. I am also not able to request quota increases through Support either. What steps can I take ?

    Solution:

Seems like Azure for Students does not support providing vCores to several workspaces at the same time, from my observations. I deleted all existing workspaces, then recreated one with Apache Spark Pool, and it had the 12 allocated vCores. Could also simply be that the ressources were not available on Microsoft's end at that time.

If I missed anything please let me know and I'd be happy to add it to my answer, or feel free to comment below with any additional information.

    Hi Ramzi Belbahri,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

It appears that your Azure for Students subscription initially provided 12 vCores for Azure Synapse Spark Pools, but recent workspaces now have 0 allocated vCores, preventing Spark pool operations. This change may be due to subscription limitations or policy updates.

    Possible Causes:

Subscription Limits: Azure for Students subscriptions often have strict quotas, which can vary over time. It's possible that the initial 12 vCores were a temporary allowance, and the current default is 0 vCores.

Policy Changes: Microsoft periodically updates service limits and policies, which might have affected your vCore allocation.

    Recommended Actions:

    Verify Current Quotas:

    • Navigate to the Azure portal.
      • Go to your Synapse workspace.
        • Check the "Usage + quotas" section to confirm your current vCore allocation.
        Request a Quota Increase:
      • In the Azure portal, select "Help + support."
      • Click on "New support request."
      • Choose "Service and subscription limits (quotas)" as the issue type.
      • Select "Azure Synapse Analytics" for the quota type.
      • Specify "Apache Spark (vCore) per workspace" and request an increase.
      • Note: Some support requests may require a paid support plan.
    • Consider Upgrading Your Subscription:
      • If quota increases are unavailable under the Azure for Students subscription, upgrading to a Pay-As-You-Go subscription may be necessary to access higher resource limits.
      • Be aware that upgrading will transition you to a paid model, and a valid payment method will be required.
    • Contact Azure Support:
      • If you're unable to request a quota increase or need further assistance, contact Azure Support directly.
      • They can provide guidance tailored to your subscription type and current limitations.

For more detailed information on managing quotas and support requests, refer to Microsoft's official documentation:

    Microsoft Learn

By following these steps, you should be able to address the vCore allocation issue in your Azure for Students subscription.
