Error Encountered While Deleting VM and Disks in Azure

I attempted to delete a VM yesterday, but it is marked for deletion and I'm unable to perform any updates or other actions. The status indicates that the VM is marked for deletion.

Additionally, I've noticed that the disks are not detached, showing "2 data disks pending detachment."

I've tried using both the Azure CLI and the portal, including the force option, but without success.

Any quick suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

It seems like the VM deletion is stuck due to the disks not being fully detached. To resolve this, first manually detach the disks and then attempt to delete the VM again.

You can detach the disks using the Azure CLI:

az vm disk detach --resource-group <resource-group-name> --vm-name <vm-name> --name <disk-name>

After detaching, you can proceed to delete the VM using the force option:

az vm delete --resource-group <resource-group-name> --name <vm-name> --force

Make sure there are no dependencies or locks on the resources. Sometimes, other resources might be preventing the deletion.

Hi Sai Krishna Katakam,

No, in portal, detach option was not shown. while trying from command, its showing disks marks for deletion. Update Azure VM command also showing the same error.

Error: Operation 'Update VM' is not allowed on VM. since the VM is marked for deletion. You can only retry the Delete operation (or wait for an ongoing one to complete).

Sometimes, using the Azure Resource Explorer can help in manually updating the state of the VM and disks. Navigate to the Azure Resource Explorer, find the VM resource and manually update the state.

If the Azure CLI isn’t working, try using PowerShell to force delete the VM and its associated resources:

Remove-AzVM -ResourceGroupName <ResourceGroupName> -Name <VMName> -Force
