How to refresh a Power BI semantic model via Azure Logic App

Hello,

We recently migrated our Azure Analysis Services models to Power BI premium semantic models and I’m trying to figure out why my logic app is failing.

I'm performing a POST api call to the semantic model using OAuth via service principal/app registration to the Power BI semantic model but receiving a ‘Bad Gateway’ error getting AD OAuth token

Does someone have an example they could share with me?

We could see that you are experiencing 'Bad Gateway’ error. This Error we usually get when the service principal not having the right permissions or the API URL being incorrect. Double-check your API permissions and ensure you have provided the correct tenant ID, client ID, and client secret.

Apart from that Please follow the below steps to setup Azure Logic App:

In the Azure portal, create a new Logic App.

Choose a trigger that suits your scenario.

Add a new action using an HTTP connector to request the OAuth token. Configure it as follows:

URI: https://login.microsoftonline.com/{tenantId}/oauth2/v2.0/token

Headers:

Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded

Body: client_id={your-client-id} client_secret={your-client-secret} scope=https://analysis.windows.net/powerbi/api/.default grant_type=client_credentials

Add a condition to check if the response from the token request is successful (status code 200).

Add another HTTP action to refresh your Power BI dataset. Configure it as follows:

Method: POST

URI: https://api.powerbi.com/v1.0/myorg/groups/{groupId}/datasets/{datasetId}/refreshes

Headers:

Authorization: Bearer {token} (use the token from the previous step)

Content-Type: application/json

Prerequisites for Refreshing Power BI Semantic Models via Azure Logic App:

Ensure your Power BI workspace is set to Premium to enable semantic models and API access.

Register an application in Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) to represent your Logic App.

Grant the necessary API permissions to the service principal associated with the registered application. Specifically, you'll need the "Dataset.ReadWrite.All" permission to refresh datasets.

For the grant_type, I used client_credentials as listed within your response along with the client_id, client_secret and scope

Review Logic App Configuration:

Open your Azure Logic App and navigate to the first action (HTTP connector) that requests the token.

Verify that the "Body" field within the connector configuration matches the format mentioned above.

Pay close attention to any encoding issues. Double-check for extra spaces or characters that might be causing the error.

Verify that the Azure AD application has the necessary permissions (specifically, "Delegated - Power BI Service" under the "Microsoft Graph" permission group) to access Power BI resources. I was finally able to test this out but still having issues.

Here is a snippet of my setup within my Logic App Designer

I'm unsure where I'm going wrong and any additional help with my setup would be greatly appreciated.

Also once this is running, would I have the option of refreshing the model on a table level as well, just like we did within Azure Analysis Services?

Earlier we are getting grant_type issue. You are still getting the same issue or any other issue. Could you please elaborate the issue you are getting now and also provide further details about their Logic App configuration, including screenshots (masking sensitive information) of the HTTP connector settings for both the token request and dataset refresh actions. This additional information might help diagnose the issue more precisely.

As for refreshing the model on a table level, unfortunately, Azure Logic Apps cannot refresh Power BI models on a table level at this time. This functionality was available in Azure Analysis Services, but not yet supported in Power BI.

I'm receiving the same issue as before. Here is a screenshot of the setup within my Logic App. I'm not sure if I'm missing any parameters or not but the error was the same as before.

Would it be possible if you could provide me with an example screenshot of how this should be setup? I've tried different combinations but have yet to get this to work
