SharePoint DocumentID is not visible in Word until after 2nd. time the document is opened

Hello.

I work on a project, where we use the SharePoint Document ID feature. However, some users experience that the Document ID is not available (synchronized to-) in Word, until the document has been opened twice. There are no error messages or warning of any kind.

The issue does not occur for all users - only for some. Also, the issue only occurs if the document library has enabled content types and at least 2 content types is attached to the document library.

It seems that Word version is not the issue, since two users with the same Word build: Microsoft® Word til Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2312 Build 16.0.17126.20132) 64-bit experience different behaviour. For one user the the Document Id value is available the first time the document is opened, while the other user needs to open the document twice to see the Document Id value.

For testing purposes we have used a standard document library with the standard Document content type, and a UI created content type, that inherits the document ct and has one additional textfield.

How do we illiminate the issue of having to open Word documents twice to get the document id value and other Content Type metadata to appear in the document properties within MS Word?

    Hi @Lars Kohsel ,

Thank you for posrting in this community.

It seems this is not a common issue per my test. Everything is fine in my environment. However, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation. My guess might be because of synchronization issues.

1.Test on a different computer: Log in on another computer with the problematic user account to see if the problem persists. This will help determine if the problem is user-specific or a computer synchronization issue.

2.If it's not a synchronization issue, try updating and patching: Make sure that both SharePoint and Word are up to date with the latest patches and updates. Sometimes, issues like these are resolved in newer updates.

Hope the information can help you. And if there have any unclear or misunderstanding, please feel free to post back and we’ll continue to help you all the time!

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated! Hope you have a good day and keep safe!

    Hi @Lars Kohsel ,

You seem to have found the problem, I would make a brief summary of this thread, this will help other users who have the same problem:

    Issue Symptom:

For some specific users, need to open it through the app a second time to see the Document Id value.

    Current status:

If the user opens a document in a document library, where Content Types are not enabled the user does NOT experience the issue. So it seems to be coupled with the usage of content types.

You could click the "Accept Answer" button for this summary to close this thread, and this can make it easier for other community member's to see the useful information when reading this thread. Thanks for your understanding!
