Question

My Requirement:

In the task sequence, I need to assign computers to a specific OU based on the model and rename the computer according to the serial number following a set rule.

My Issue:

When redeploying the OS on the same machine, there is already a computer account with the same name in OU, and the device can be found in the SCCM console. Since the OU already contains a computer account with the same name, the task sequence cannot rename the computer as required, I tried using a script to delete the previous computer account before renaming, it works ,but this results in two devices with the same name still showing up in the SCCM console.

Is there a better solution for this? Are there better Task Sequence workflows for repeatedly installing the operating system?

Here are the possible solutions per my experience:

1. One possible solution is like your solution, use a script to move the existing computer account to another OU before renaming the computer.
2. Another option is to use a different naming convention that includes a unique identifier, such as the MAC address or UUID, to avoid conflicts with existing computer accounts. This can be achieved by modifying the task sequence to use a custom script to generate the computer name based on the unique identifier.
3. It is also recommended to periodically clean up inactive computer accounts in SCCM to avoid clutter in the console. This can be done using the "Delete Aged Discovery Data" maintenance task in SCCM.
