What is the purpose of Azure stack settings .NET Version?

I'm setting up Azure Function app .net8 isolated and noticed that in Configuration -> General Settings -> Stack settings .NET Version is set to .NET Framework 4.8, however the function works fine. What does the .NET version imply in this context? Does this version miss match affect the Function app or can I ignore it?

@Tomas Blažauskas Thanks for reaching out. The .NET version setting in the Azure stack settings refers to the version of the .NET runtime that is used to run your application.

It's possible that you have created function app in .net 4.8 and now you have deployed .net 8.0 app in the same function app

If this function app is created very long back, you have to update the stack settings manually, please update the stack settings to. Net8 isolated.

It is an old function, but it never was of version .net 4.8. I'm doing migration from in-process .net6 to .net8 isolated right now and noticed that functions have default (4.8?) version that is being used in these settings, and as mentioned before it seems not to affect the performance of the function. Also noticed that functions that are still using in-process .net6 also have version of .net 4.8 set (and it is not compatible with in-process worker).

So further questions would be more out of curiosity, what can happen if there is version miss match? Will it affect performance, or can some unexpected behavior happen?

@Tomas Blažauskas Thanks for getting back, I had a discussion internally and confirmed that this version mismatch will have no impact at all.

The reason why the portal is not displaying the expected version ".NET 8 Isolated" is because the site property ".netFrameworkVersion" seems to be still set to "v4.0". Our tooling sets the value when the function app is created. However, if, for example, an ARM template is used to create the function app, and the property is not set in the template, it defaults to "v4.0". Most likely this could be your scenario.
