User account migration

Question

I have a company that brought me on as their first IT and want me to migrate all of their unmanaged devices and accounts to Intune and Entra. I can easily have their 3rd party M365 license provider give me the tenant and I can rebuy the licenses through Microsoft. However, the users are not using their domain emails or Microsoft accounts as their default accounts on their devices and are having to creating @outlook.com emails. Once I migrate to Microsoft I want to also migrate those accounts to using their Microsoft accounts, because if we don't there can be issues with who owns data. Is there a way to do this without having the users create brand new accounts on the devices? And if they do, is there an easy way of transferring data that isn't relying on OneDrive or manually transferring the data with admin rights?

Here’s how you can handle this situation:

Azure AD Join: Have users join their existing devices to Azure AD using their Microsoft 365 domain accounts. This process will convert their local accounts to Azure AD accounts without requiring new accounts.

Set Primary Alias: For users using @outlook.com emails, set their Microsoft 365 domain email as the primary alias in the Microsoft 365 admin center. This will transition their email and user profile to the correct domain account.

Device Enrollment: Enroll devices in Intune using automatic enrollment settings. Users won’t need to create new accounts or reset their devices.

Data Migration:

• Windows User Profile Transfer: Use the User State Migration Tool (USMT) to transfer user profiles and data between accounts or to an Azure AD-joined account.
  • Third-Party Tools: Consider third-party migration tools that facilitate data migration between user profiles on the same device without manual data transfer or OneDrive reliance.
  Post-Migration: After migrating to Intune, ensure all devices are compliant and secured using the company’s policies.
