ADLS storage cost for premium & standard tier

Currently we save about 400GB of data (expect to grow to 2TB on production) in ADLS and select the standard hot tier service. Our monthly bill shows that most of the storage cost (96%) are for the data transaction (iterative read, regular read/write, etc). The cost of space (Hot LRS data stored) is only a tiny fraction of the total cost.

I checked the transaction cost for both premium and standard tier, it seems we made a mistake to choose standard hot tier. If we choose premium tier, we will save a lot on transaction cost. Due to our small space consumption, the increased space cost won't make a dent on our total cost. In the meantime, we shall gain performance improvement too.

Is it right that we can actually cut cost by moving to the premium tier if our sapce consumption is small, say less than 2TB? How much can we expect for write performance improvement after switching to premium tier?

    Hi,

What I would recommend is to Prepare Azure usage file for your last 3 invoices, download, import this into spreadsheet, and then analyze the price of Premium. Depending on your precise transaction types and amount Premium could cost more.

The reason I say the above is because certain types of operations cost more in addition to storage costing more with Premium. It may very well be that Premium will cost you less, but until you do the analysis based on your data it is hard to know for sure.

To generate usage file you would navigate to Cost Management + Billing -- Invoices blade, click on three dots to right of each invoice entry and choose Prepare Azure usage file.

    Thanks.
