Hello, I have Windows Server 2022 Std and I would like to install 5x VMs in Hyper-V with the Windows 11 system. It is written everywhere that it is possible to install 2 VM Servers, but I do not know how the Windows 11 stations that I would like to install there. I need other licenses or the Windows Data Center system?

Hi, so there are two answers with two different opinons. Can anyone confirm one or the other? I have the same question: is it allowed to run several Windows 11 Pro VMs (of course with a seperate Win 11 Pro License for every VM) on a Windows Server 2022 Standard Hyper-V host while there is already a Windows Server 2022 Standard VM running?

    • Windows Server 2022 STD allows you to run two Windows Server 2022 Hyper-V Virtual Machines in case the host system is running hypervisor only.
    • In order to legally run up to 6 x Hyper-V Windows Server 2022 virtual machines, you need to have three licenses in total.
    • You are not legally allowed to run Windows 10/11 virtual machines on top of Windows Server 2022 STD unless you have an active VDI subscription.

Windows Server 2022 Standard edition allows you to run two virtual instances of Windows Server on the same physical server using the same license. However, when it comes to Windows 11 or other client operating systems, the licensing is different.

For Windows client operating systems, such as Windows 11, the licensing is generally designed for individual devices rather than being server-centric. Each virtual machine (VM) running Windows 11 requires its own separate Windows 11 license, even if it's hosted on a Windows Server running Hyper-V.

In your scenario, if you want to install Windows 11 on five virtual machines on your Windows Server 2022 Hyper-V host, you will need five individual Windows 11 licenses. The licensing model for client operating systems is per device or per user, and it's separate from the server licensing model.

    Best Regards,
