OneDrive 100% CPU unable to kill process

Hello,

Since a couple of weeks we have an issue with some users with OneDrive. I believe it is FSLogix related. The user gets stuck in his Remote Desktop session. We log him off, his session is gone but there is still one OneDrive.exe executable remaining under his name. Which is at 100% CPU. The FSLogix ODFC and Profile disk are unmounted and already gone. In task manager there is no user visible under 'Users'. It's just one OneDrive.exe process. I tried to kill it in every way possible, process monitor, wmic, taskkill force etc but it's impossible to kill the process. I always get access denied. The only solution is to restart the server.

We run RDS, Server 2019, FSLogix 2210 HF2 (latest) and latest OneDrive version.

We have a similar issue on a Citrix environment, server 2019 and Fslogix. Additionally, after some extended time, Onedrive causes the Network List Service to become inoperable.

Due to this, Outlook stops starting for users. We have had an open issue on this on Microsoft support, but it has not been resolved because the behavior cannot be simulated and the incidence of the problem is very low in our environment.

My suspicion is some issue with Onedrive updating in a multi-user environment. Our servers are persistent, so we prefer to have some updates working.

I am currently trying to manage Onedrive Scheduled Tasks for updates and reporting.
Disabling Onedrive Per-Machine Standalone Update Task on workdays.
Deleting the OneDrive Reporting Task that Onedrive creates for each user.

I can't say if this has any effect, the incidence of the problem is very small. We've been managing Onedrive tasks for less than a month at the moment.

Thanks Karel for your response. This issue has been driving me crazy for months. We've already disabled the Onedriveupdates becuase were on an non persistant desktop, but the issue still happens. I will give it a try to remove the reporting task and see if it helps. I have read on other forums this could possibly be related to the Office Document Cache becoming unrepsonsive but I'm yet to verify this.

If you opened a case on Microsoft support. You can point to our tracking ID #2310060050003597. It is the same issue.

No we just learned to live with it, until at one point I've upgraded to Server 2022 (fresh non-persistent image) and the issue just disappeared. I can't exactly say when or how but I never saw the issue again.

Thanks Karel I will look at logging a call. Martijn thats really interesting becuase were looking at moving to 2022. We had recently built a fresh 2019 and I was expecting the new build to maybe fix the issue becuase there was possibly some software corruption but unfortuntly the issue continued. Do you use FSlogix ?

I think it is a common but unsolved problem. Compare e.g. to this question

Hypothesis:

The OS cannot resolve the user, hence it cannot know whether you have the required privilege to kill the process.

Untested fix:

Take a look at the Services tab in Task Manager.

Does TermService run? Start or restart.

Perhaps also consider VaultSvc.

Look in Event Viewer: Any errors / warnings saying service xxx could not be started, when you try to kill the process? Then try to restart such services.
