Azure Data Studio - Not able to connect to Oracle DB -Getting ORA-12504: TNS:listener was not given the SERVICE_NAME in CONNECT_DATA error

Hi
I installed, Azure Data Studio, Downloaded the extension for Oracle .
However while connecting to an Oracle database Im getting the following error
ORA-12504: TNS:listener was not given the SERVICE_NAME in CONNECT_DATA
This is not an issue with the target database as a colleague was able to connect to this serve from his Azure Data Studio. so looks like some configuration is missing for me

Can you confirm if the connection via SQL*Plus succeeds?
How do you connect to Oracle – via TNSNAMES or direct host/port?

2023-05-26T12:14:24.9+00:00 Hi I do not have any other ORacle clients, but can confirm that the connection works from Azure Data studio in a colleague's machine .
Im using the TNS name. Even if I use the ipaddress, it gives me the same error

- Your tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora files
- A screenshot of your Oracle connection in Azure Data Studio
- Tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora from the machine that successfully connects to that Oracle instance, if different from yours
- A screenshot from Azure Data Studio from that machine – if different from yours
- A SQL*Plus / TNSPing output from that machine – if available

Venetie van, Hans 0 Reputation points2023-07-12T13:30:43.1+00:00 I got the same issue, after giving the right values and connect it keeps on trying no errors. And also server:port/schema didn't help me. checked the oracle settings and tnsping $ORACLE_SID = succeeding als when I connect by sqlplus it's ok. Now the "strange"part when I use SSMA I got right away connection ... so I hope that someone regonise this.

Glenn Menard 0 Reputation points2024-12-04T18:11:48.4166667+00:00 After some experimenting, I able to connect to an oracle database that is "Non Grid Infrastructure". If I try to connect to a database that has Grid Infrastructure(i.e. RAC, scan listeners, etc.), it fails.
