Mail delivery and NDR after license removal

After license removal can the e-mail account still be there for a longer period of time but without a mailbox? Can the account exist for more than 30 days?

Can the mailbox exist for longer than 30 days after license removal and still receive e-mails?

Does Microsoft send out a NDR automatically after license removal? Or after the mailbox was deleted because of the license removal? Or does it have to be set manually? Which error code would it be?

Thank you all so much for your input!

    Hi @Vass, Mag. Claudia ,

1.If the user's license is removed directly, the person sending the email to that user will receive the NDR.

    User's image

2.If the user's mailbox is converted to a shared mailbox before the license is removed, no NDR will be received and the email will go to the shared mailbox.

    User's image

3.The shared mailbox can receive emails, see above.

4-6.What do you mean by delete and revoke respectively? If the email can be received then no NDR will be received. For any undeliverable messages, the sender will receive an NDR.

7.Are you referring to forwarding rules? If the license is removed, the user does not have a mailbox and the forwarding rule will not take effect.

    Hi @Vass, Mag. Claudia ,

When an Exchange Online license for a user is revoked, the user object is converted to a mail user (MailUser).

If license re-assignment happens after more than 30 days, a mailbox will be assigned, but it won’t have any previous mailbox content. If the license is reassigned within 30 days of revocation, then mailbox content will be restored.

If you delete the license directly, then the user will not have a mailbox and will not be able to send mail to it (users who send mail to that mailbox will automatically receive the NDR), you can convert it to a shared mailbox first and then delete the license.

For more details refer to: Upcoming changes to license re-assignment in Exchange Online
