Windows being resized when reconnecting to a remote desktop session

Hi,

I am using remote desktop to connect from one Win10 Enterprise PC to another, full-screen.

Both are physical PCs, not VMs, and are both connected to a monitor. Both monitors run at the same native resolution, with display scaling at 100%. Both are single-monitor systems.

If, for any reason, my remote session drops and I have to reconnect, I find that the windows in the remote session have been moved and resized, as if the resolution was briefly lower. Windows move towards the upper left, leaving a cleared area at the base and right of the screen.

Any reason why this might happen? Anywhere to look for logs that might shed light on what's going on?

I don't understand how such an obvious bug is still being asked for so many details. I can reproduce this on all my real PCs and VMs.
If you're a developer and work through RDP you'll notice this each time all the dev tools keep resizing and all the little tool windows get pushed around the screen.

Is nobody using windows 10 at Microsoft as a development environment? If so, I would have been so annoyed by this and did something about it! This says so much on so many levels about Microsoft these days... not all of us stay with our heads in console command lines. 10 years ago nothing like this happened on the desktop side of things... now everyone is using web desktop wanna be apps. How have we fallen!

Also, this is somethig that was recently introduce because I have my multiple VM working setup since well before 1903 and nothing like this happened, it's only recently that each morning when I open my RDPs I get screwed by this and have to spend 5 minutes rearranging everything!

    Hi,

I can see your comments and screenshots.

Please try configuring below group policies on remote PC to see if the issue could be resolved.

    Computer Configration\Administrative Templates\Windows Componets\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Remote Session Environment
Use hardware graphics for all Remote Desktop Services sessions - Enabled
Limit maximum display resolution - Enabled (use your monitors' resolution)

    Thanks,

    Eleven

@Eleven Yu (Shanghai Wicresoft Co,.Ltd.) , I have the same issue as @Michael Sandells . Both of my systems are configured as 3840x2160.

As to your question - the issue does NOT persist if using smaller resolutions. But I disagree this should be by-design. I think what you meant is it's a bug, but behaves as coded (these are not the same). I would like it to get fixed if possible - it's really annoying to have to continually resize the windows when I log in.

@JD, your issue is not the same. As @Michael Sandells writes, the local AND remote machine are both configured at the same resolution. Your issue is expected behavior (the windows have to go somewhere when the resolution is changed.

I had the same issue, my windows were resizing and their heights were getting 100-200 px.

I have applied all the suggested Group Policy settings here and from other similar issues, but none of them helped.

Then during my repeated reconnect tests, I have noticed that the windows are shown as normal for a moment and then getting resized.

In my case, I had configured a non-standard resolution (by editing the rdp file), 1750x1050 which fits well for my needs. I thought that might be the case and changed it to a standard 1680x1050, and my issues were gone.
Thus, try using a standard resolution (The one you select from the Remote Desktop connect window).
I hope this resolves your problem as well.
