Where Azure File Share Backup sets physically stored?

Hi,

I understand that I can configure Azure File Share backup through Recovery Service Vault. I want to know where (which Azure data center) the backup data is stored / located. For example, if I have Azure File Share in North Europe and setup Azure Backup, will the backup snapshots stored / located in North Europe data centre? or somewhere having good physical distance?

Regards,

    Hi @Takahiro Yoshida,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum, thank you for posting your query here!

Azure File Share backup data is stored in Recovery Services vaults, which are online-storage entities in Azure. When you set up Azure Backup for an Azure File Share located in a specific region, such as North Europe, the backup data will typically be stored in the same region to ensure compliance and reduce latency. However, the specific physical location within that region can vary, as Azure uses multiple data centers within each region for redundancy and availability.

If you choose geo-redundant storage (GRS) for your backup, the data will be replicated to a secondary region for additional protection against region-wide outages.

Hello , Welcome to MS Q&A

Azure File Share backup data is stored in a Recovery Services vault, which is located in the same region as the vault itself. This means if your Recovery Services vault is in North Europe, the backup data will also be stored there. For more detailed information, you can refer to the following Microsoft documentation:

Please let me know if any further questions

    Kindly accept if it helps

    Thanks,

    Deepanshu

    Hello Takahiro Yoshida,

As Ashok Gandhi Kotnana and Deepanshu katara mentioned, the backups will be stored in the same region's data center where the associated recovery services vault created.

You can refer to the official document which can illustrate the locations of the data centers.

refer to the North Europe's data center infoUser's image

"I revisited FileShare backup / Recovery Vault but was not able to find GRS setting for the backup sets?"

To enable the storage replication type as GRS, please follow the below snippet.

Go to recovery services vault>Settings>click on Properties>choose Backup Configuration option>click update>then select GRS redundant>Apply.User's image

Note: This option cannot be changed once after protecting items.

I.e. if you can select GRS then you protect items to RSV, post these activities you intend to change the redundancy to LRS means it won't support.

    Hi,

Thanks for the quick responses. Can I make further questions:

    • Can I have url(s) to official document(s) that states the physical location of the backup, if you knew? (I've spent certain time)
    • I revisited FileShare backup / Recovery Vault but was not able to find GRS setting for the backup sets. I know I can configure it at the Storage Account layer. How can I tell I want GRS for the backup sets, if you knew?

    Regards,
