Slow Live Migration for Linux (Debian 12) VMs Compared to Windows VMs on Hyper-V Cluster

Problem Description
We have a 2-node Windows Server 2022 Hyper-V failover cluster. Both nodes host highly available (HA) VMs, including a Debian 12 VM (48GB RAM) and a Windows Server 2022 VM (4GB RAM).

While failover works perfectly for both VMs, live migration of the Debian 12 VM takes significantly longer than the Windows VM.

  • Windows VM (4GB RAM): Live migration completes in 1-2 minutes.
  • Debian VM (48GB RAM): Live migration takes 5-6 minutes, even with similar network/storage configurations.

Technical Details:

  • Hyper-V Hosts: Windows Server 2022 Enterprise (fully patched).
  • Cluster: 2-node cluster with shared storage (CSV).

- VM Configurations:
 - Debian 12: 48GB RAM, 24 vCPUs, Hyper-V Gen 2 VM, static memory, VHDX on CSV.
 - Windows Server 2022: 4GB RAM, 1 vCPUs, Hyper-V Gen 1 VM, static memory, same CSV.

  • Networking: Dedicated 1 Gbps NIC for live migration

    Hi,

Debian is supported on Hyper-V but the performance could be different because it uses different virtualization service client which redirect device request to the parent partition and different integration service than Windows. You can try upgrading the kernel to see if the performance is improved.
