Windows Update Failed on First Few Attempts

Windows Server 2022 Update failed on first few attempts, while restarting it is showing couldn't complete updates and undoing changes. However, after some time, we noticed that the update became successful but another update failed with the same error.

We have tried to run Windows Troubleshooter, but it keeps asking to restart the server which always returned - couldn't complete update and undoing changes.

    Hello,

Here are some steps you can try:

1.Manually downloading the updates from Microsoft Update Catalog.

2.Performing a clean boot. This is a way of starting Windows with only the essential services and programs, which can help eliminate any software conflicts that might interfere with the update process. Please refer to this link: How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support

3.Restarting the update services. You can do this by using the Services tool (services.msc) and stopping and starting the following services: Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Cryptographic Services, Windows Installer.

4.Check if there is enough disk space available on your system drive. If not, free up some space and try the update again.

    1. Disable any third-party antivirus or firewall software temporarily and try the update again.

    Have a nice day.

    Best Regards,

    Hania

    Hi Hania,

    Sorry for late replying.

We were able to install the update manually, however user does not want to install manually as it's quite troublesome. We have also tried steps 2-5, but none was working. System Reverved Partition size is 100MB, with 20MB used. Could it be that the SRP needs to be extended to more than 500MB?

Yes, the size of the System Reserved Partition (SRP) can indeed be a factor. For Windows 11, it's recommended that the SRP be at least 500MB.Since your SRP is currently only 100MB, increasing its size to 500MB or more could help resolve the update issues you're experiencing.
