Windows Admin Center (WAC) - Can't connect/manage gateway anymore after forced extension updates - STATUS PROVIDER MISSSING

I had a express windows admin center setup ready for a file server migration, completely locally onprem on a local VM, no azure involvement, the storage migration job was created and everything set to run.. only for me to log on today and to discover that windows admin center needed to some updates.

After the updates the "connect/manage as" buttons for my local gateway are greyed out and trying to double click on the gateway gives me the following error message "Status provider missing" - "No status provider exists for a connection type of msft.sme.connection-type.server. Ensure the appropriate connection manager exentension is installed for this connection type."

What i tried to so far to troubleshoot:

  • different browser(s)
  • installed WAC on another VM for testing -> same exact error/result
  • reinstalled WAC + reboot on original windows admin center vm -> same exact error/result
  • used the pre-generated SSL cert
  • checked event viewer but i don't see any errors or anything out of the ordinary

How can i resolve this issue? Ofcourse this always happens when you have something important planned..

Was able to fix it myself by installing the "server manager & computers" extension under options, for some reason the update uninstalled/removed this extension.

Might be helpfull in case someone else encounters the same issue because i couldn't find ANY information about this particular error through google/microsoft docs.

In the end i found the solution by asking DEEPSEEK for some directions.

I had the identical experience, got a lot to learn...

where do I find this "server manager & computers" extension (under options)? Under what "options" and where do I install it? On the server(s)?

    thanks...

Duh, found it... it's in "Windows Admin Center" under the "settings -->Gateway --> Extensions --> Available extensions"

    There was a "new" version...

I can not update to "Server Manager and Computer Management 4.24.0" .

I will not install, and when updating version 4.23.0, it removes 4.23.0 and will not update

I had this problem, too. The only fix, for me, was to disable the automatic extensions updates and then install the 4.23.0 version of "

    Server Manager and Computer Management."

It seems that the 4.24.0 version must be broken.
