How to change the VM to use a new recovery services vault?

Current Setup:

  • Resource Group RG_VM contains VM1.
  • Resource Group RG_Recovery contains RSV1.
  • VM1 is protected using RSV1.

Desired Setup:

  • Create RSV2 in RG_VM.
  • Backup VM1 in RSV2.

Steps Taken:

  1. In RSV1, stopped the backup and retained the data to avoid losing existing backups.
  2. Attempted to add VM1 to RSV2, but encountered an issue because VM1's backup is still associated with RSV1.

Question:

Is it absolutely necessary to move VM1 to a different resource group in order to add it to a new RSV?

    Hello Nihkil,

Welcome to the community! At this current time, yes, it is necessary to move the VM to a different resource group. To achieve your desired setup without losing the data in RSV1, you can follow these steps:

    1. Stop Protection and Retain Data: As you have already done, stop the backup in RSV1 and retain the data. This ensures that the existing recovery points are preserved.
    2. Move VM1 to a Different Resource Group: Unfortunately, to associate VM1 with a new Recovery Services Vault (RSV2), you will need to move VM1 to a different resource group. This is because a VM can only be associated with one Recovery Services Vault at a time, and the association is tied to the resource group.
    3. Create RSV2 in RG_VM: Create the new Recovery Services Vault (RSV2) in the RG_VM resource group.
    4. Reconfigure Backup: Once VM1 is moved to a different resource group, you can configure the backup for VM1 in RSV2. This will create new recovery points in RSV2 while retaining the old recovery points in RSV1.
