I created a windows server backup to a network drive that initially worked but now fails. When I use the option of backing up once using the same settings for the scheduled backup, it is successful. I cannot figure out why the automated back is not working. The error message is that "windows server cannot write to backup storage location". The shared folder is accessible in file Explorer and I can write to it from the server.

Check the security context in which the backup runs. Verify that the account used by the backup task has write permissions on the network share.

    1. To test:
      1. Open the scheduled backup task in Task Scheduler.
      2. Confirm which user account is configured to run the task.
      3. Ensure that account has write permissions on the network share (NTFS and file share level)

If this runs as the SYSTEM account, then your permissions are irrelevant (so the fact that you can access the share does not imply that the backup process will be able to). Assign the permissions to the computer account of the server.

    Hi Jason,

Thanks for your post. Please check the security context in which the backup runs. Verify that the account used by the backup task has write permissions on the network share. To test:

    a. Open the scheduled backup task in Task Scheduler.

    b. Confirm which user account is configured to run the task.

    c. Ensure that account has write permissions on the network share (NTFS and file share level)

If this runs as the SYSTEM account, then your permissions are irrelevant (so the fact that you can access the share does not imply that the backup process will be able to). Assign the permissions to the computer account of the server.

    Best Regards,
