Cannot access my own Azure subscription (Free Trial) after removing Owner role

Details I have a Free Trial subscription in Azure, and I’m the only user who originally set it up. Unfortunately, I removed my own “Owner” role (not sure how), and now I can’t manage the subscription at all:

  • I get “Insufficient privileges” whenever I try to open Access Control (IAM) or assign roles.
  • I can’t open a support ticket from the portal because I’m missing the Support Request Contributor role.
  • I’m still on a Free Trial with remaining credits, and I don’t want to lose them by canceling.
  • I can’t even delete the subscription to start over, because it says I have no permission to do that either.

I’ve tried:

  • Signing in with the same account I used to set up the Free Trial.
  • Checking my Azure AD roles; I’m a Global Administrator there, but that doesn’t automatically grant me Owner on the subscription.
  • Attempting to “Elevate access” in Azure AD, but I’m still blocked from assigning myself the Owner role.

Question: How can I restore my subscription ownership (and billing access) so that I can continue using my Free Trial subscription — or at least delete it properly if needed? I don’t want to lose my

Any help or guidance is much appreciated.

Thank you!

    Hello Adrian,

    Thanks for your question.

    • Go to Entra and Under Properties, select Manage access.
    • Enable Access management for Azure resources. This elevates your Global Administrator role to manage Azure subscriptions. Wait a few minutes.

After doing this, go to the subscription > IAM and see if you can elevate to to Owner role.

You can mark it 'Accept Answer' and 'Upvote' if this helped you

    Regards,

    Abiola
