check if your system has sufficient resources such as CPU, memory, and storage. If any of these are less, the backup may fail. Also, make sure that the application you are backing up is not in the middle of any tasks or transactions. If possible, stop the application temporarily before starting the backup. It’s also a good idea to make sure the backup software is up to date or reinstall it if you suspect there are issues.
Next, make sure your network connection is stable if your backup is sent over the network. Any interference can cause the process to fail. Also, make sure that the system time between your VM and the backup server is synchronized, as inconsistent times can cause problems. If you are using a Windows VM, make sure VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) is running properly, as VSS issues can prevent backups as well.
If none of these steps help, check the backup and system logs for more information on the real cause. If the problem persists, I suggest contacting Microsoft Support with logs for detailed troubleshooting.
