How do I change my Teams name without impacting my account info

Question

Im transitioning from Skype to free teams.

I am not using a work or school account-I am accessing free Teams using my personal microsoft account details

I want to change my Teams name to my old skype display name (a single nickname-no last name) without impacting ANY OTHER ACCOUNT DETAILS including my MICROSOFT ACCOUNT

There seems to be instructions that we can do that by clicking our profile picture then clicking 'edit display name' (the little pencil icon) which I do but that presents a set of two boxes with my First and my last name with what appear to be mandatory field asterisks next to both. (see attached picture)

It simply wont let me delete my last name and display my one word nick name in the first name box without the save box disappearing and also says changes will be reflected in my microsoft account

what am I getting wrong here? 'Edit display name' should do just that shouldnt it? i.e. Edit the displayed name...not change or alter my name in my microsoft account and not demand to use my full formal name or a two name variant for chatting casually to people I meet for whom I might want to tentatively guard my privacy?

According to your case description, you are transitioning from Skype to Teams (free) and you want to change your profile name.

I understand that you want to change your Teams name to your old Skype display name (single nickname - no last name) without affecting any other account details. Unfortunately, when you change your profile, it will be updated to your Microsoft account.

If you want to know more details, please refer to Update your profile in Microsoft Teams (free).

As you mentioned, click on your profile picture and then click on "Edit display name" (little pencil icon) to change the information.

Alternatively, you can log in to your Microsoft account and change your name in your information. (As mentioned earlier, when you change the information in Teams, it will be updated to your Microsoft account)
