Configurations to speed up Windows server

I have a Virtual Server with dedicated hardware and a fresh new Windows Server 2022.

The server has 6 dedicated cores, 48GB RAM, which are almost not utilized (1% CPU Usage, 7% RAM usage).

And still the server is very slow and laggy when connected via Remote Desktop, even if you drag an explorer windows around.

I checked the performance with CineBench SingleCPU benchmark, but the numbers were not significantly low, although working on it feels like a pain, because there is a delay after each click.

I checked with another VPS from another provider with much less hardware and it run more smoothly than the first one.

So I assume there is maybe something wrong with the configuration of the Windows servers for using the Desktop environment via Remote Desktop.

So my question is: Which configurations and settings could be the reason for the laggy server?

    Hello Mehmet Ates,

    good evening.

CPU usages and RAM usages can only become an issue when really a lot of people simultaneously use the Remote Desktop. But then you would have installed a Terminal Server and I do not hear you having done that.
Thus I would think that the maybe first real important requirement for using Remote Desktop is that you have your Network Connection and Activity in order. Wrong network configurations and failures would drastically kill your Remote Desktop experience.

    Yours sincerely,

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

Based on the description, I understand your question is related to speed up server.

    1. Firstly you can check which process or app consumes large CPU/Memory usage in Task manager.
    2. Open Settings/ Power/ Power mode, set power plan to High Performance, which will run the processor clock speed at its maximum.
    3. Check network settings, test if network connection and speed is stable.
    4. It is recommended to check the Performance Tuning Guidelines for Windows Server 2022, which will help you make an informed decision about its relevance to your system, workload, performance, and energy usage goals.
