Compatibility Issues Power BI / SQL (version mismatch?)

Hello,

I am working on building a set of SharePoint sites,  each will have a dashboard generated by Power BI (source of data -> ERP: Vista from Viewpoint)

While testing the connectivity of Power BI Desktop using the most recent version (v 2.140.1078.0) with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (v18.12.1), I encountered issues and was having an encryption support message (server name provided does match the SQL Server SSL certificate).

When I downgraded Power BI Desktop to v 2.102.845, it does works.

Note: the most recent version of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (v 20.2) did not connect with our Server (SQL Server version 13.0.6455.2), this is why I use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio v18.12.1.

I would like to make sure of the database compatibility going forward, allowing VPN connectivity and ensure that the data source setup is not altered with future version updates.

Which version of both Power BI Desktop and Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio would you recommend to ensure a flowless development?

Should we also consider updating the SQL Server version? If so, to which one?

Thanks in advance for your support,

David
