Veeam backup copy to Azure - Speed

Hello,

I set up my Azure Blob Storage and added as a repository to my on-prem Veeam Backup server.

We have an infrastrucure of some TB and i tried to run some backup copy to the blob storage (direct way). I noticed that the speed of the transfered file are very low (like 12/20 MB/s).

Our connection is dedicated with 100MB/s upload speed.

Is there any way to have more speed on the trasfer operation to the blob storage?

Hello , Welcome to MS Q&A

To enhance the transfer speed to Azure Blob Storage from your on-prem Veeam Backup server, consider the following strategies:

Optimize Network Bandwidth: Ensure your network connection has sufficient bandwidth for backup operations. If using Azure ExpressRoute, monitor your circuit usage to confirm adequate bandwidth.

Use Concurrent Connections: Utilize multiple client connections to upload files concurrently. Azure Blob Storage scales linearly, so more connections can help achieve higher throughput.

Choose the Right Storage Account: Opt for a premium block blob storage account, which offers consistent low-latency and high transaction rates.

Reduce Network Latency: Make storage requests from a client located in the same region as the storage account to minimize latency.

Monitor and Adjust Settings: Use tools to measure network traffic and adjust backup settings based on the change rate and backup window.

Implementing these strategies can help improve the transfer speed of backups to Azure Blob Storage.

Please let me know if any further ques

Kindly accept answer if it helps

    Thanks
    Deepanshu

    Hi Canale Matteo

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A, thanks for posting your query.

Providing additional information for the above answer.

To improve the speed of your Veeam backup copy to Azure Blob Storage and your dedicated upload speed of 100 MB/s is fully utilized, consider the following factors that can impact your data transfer speed.

The maximum throughput for your transfer will be constrained by the slowest component in the network path. This includes local storage performance and the performance of Azure Blob Storage.

IOPS and Bandwidth Considerations: The performance of both the source and target storage, along with the network connecting them, will significantly influence the maximum achievable throughput. Ensure that your network infrastructure is configured to support optimal transfer speeds.https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/files/storage-files-migration-nas-cloud-databox#iops-and-bandwidth-considerations

Throttling Settings: Review your Veeam configuration for any throttling settings that might be limiting transfer speeds. Adjusting these settings can help maximize the bandwidth utilized during the transfer process.

Transfer Method: Utilize the appropriate transfer method for your files. Tools like AzCopy can enhance the efficiency of the transfer process between your on-premises environment and Azure.

Timing of Transfers: Consider scheduling your backup copies during off-peak hours when network usage is lower. This can lead to improved transfer speeds.

Compression: If applicable, enable compression in your backup settings to reduce the volume of data being transferred, which can further enhance transfer speeds.

By addressing these factors, you can potentially achieve better transfer speeds when moving data to Azure Blob Storage.

Hope the above answer helps! Please let us know do you have any further queries.
