Asking the community to find out who else may have encountered this.

As some context,

We have an ASR vault purely for on premise Hyper-V nodes to replicate to a RSV. We don't use azure backup. On our we have installed... Microsoft Azure Site Recovery Provider version 5.1.8116.0 Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent version 2.0.9260.0 I'll be honest, uncertain if we 100% need the MARS agent installed if not using Azure Backup but slept since I installed the Site Recovery Provider and I vaguely remember it prompting us to install the MARS Agent.

We've been getting this message for several months, once a month.

The email seems to highlight that either the provider or agent is out of date. However there is no indication in the RSV in azure portal that anything out of date or needing to update.

Double checking, the provider appears to be up to date (last updated Nov. 2024) but there are newer versions of the MARS agent we could install. However when attempting to install a newer version we would get 130001 errors returned.

Using AI to search for answers took me round in circles. Copilot provided...

The error "Microsoft Azure Backup encountered an internal error. (ID: 130001)" is often related to firewall or proxy configurations. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue: Check Firewall/Proxy Settings: Ensure that your firewall or proxy settings are not blocking the MARS agent. You may need to allow specific URLs and ports used by Azure Backup. Antivirus Software: Sometimes, antivirus software can interfere with the MARS agent. Try temporarily disabling your antivirus software and see if the issue persists. If this resolves the issue, consider adding an exception for the MARS agent in your antivirus settings1. Vault Credentials: Make sure you are using the correct vault credentials. Download the latest vault credentials from the Azure portal and try again. Local Storage: Move the vault credentials file to a local storage location on the server and try the operation again. Retry the Operation: Wait for a few minutes and then try the operation again. Sometimes, transient issues can cause this error. If the issue persists after trying these steps, you may need to contact Microsoft support for further assistance.

From that I tried...

  1. Allowing all outbound traffic, all ports and protocols.
  2. Disabling AV entirely.
  3. Downloading latest vault credentials from local storage
  4. running installer from local storage.
  5. rebooted several times
  6. waited later. Also checked...
  7. locale time is the same as Azure region -> RSV is in UK South and cluster node local time is UTC 0 London

So decided to ask Microsoft support....who suggest we either pay or ask the community so trying here first!

    Hi Matt Noble

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Platform! Thank you for asking your question here.

Check that your firewall or proxy isn’t blocking the MARS agent. You may need to allow access to specific URLs and ports needed by Azure Backup.

    *.microsoft.com

    *.windowsazure.com

    *.microsoftonline.com

    *.windows.net

    blob.core.windows.net

    queue.core.windows.net

Download the latest vault credentials from the Azure portal and use them when registering. If the server was registered before, make sure to unregister it first in the Azure portal before registering again.

If your vault credentials file is on a network share, move it to a local folder on the server.

Restart the MARS agent service and try registering again to fix any temporary issues.

Temporarily turn off your antivirus software if it's causing issues with the installation. If that solves the problem, add the MARS agent to your antivirus exceptions list.

Check that you're using the latest version of the MARS agent (2.0.9249.0 or above). If not, download and install the newest version from Microsoft.

Look at the logs in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent\Temp\WABackup_[timestamp].log for more details on the error to help identify the problem
