Can't transfer billing ownership of orphaned Azure subscription.

Problem

I've a disabled subscription which I don't have permissions to pay anymore because the billing owner is no longer in the company. I've been trying to get ownership back for some weeks now, to no avail.

What I tried

  • I've checked relevant self-help fixes in the Help+Support section but nothing worked.
  • I get the feeling that I'm at the point where there's nothing we can do on our own and need assistance from a human, but I'm not sure where to get this assistance since every support contact I've tried to directs me to the same Help+Support self-help articles.

I'm writing here out of desperation in the hopes that a fellow human can lend me a hand. I actually don't need this subscription anymore, but I want to make sure any outstanding amounts are paid before deactivating it for good. Thanks for your attention.

As long as you are a Global Administrator of the Entra tenant associated with the subscription, you can take ownership of it by following https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/role-based-access-control/elevate-access-global-admin?tabs=azure-portal%2Centra-audit-logs

    If not, then follow https://www.joeyverlinden.com/what-happens-if-you-lock-out-your-azure-tenant/
