Moving over OneDrive documents to a new OneDrive

Hi, my university is removing my access to my OneDrive account from 31st March onwards. Because my OneDrive was basically just a backup of my Desktop and Documents folders on my laptop, I essentially just backed up my Desktop and Documents to another OneDrive account and took that as I've downloaded all my data and won't need my school's OneDrive account anymore. However, today I opened a document on my new OneDrive that I haven't used since graduating, and while I still can use and edit the document, this warning sign appears at the top right of my Microsoft Word Desktop app. When I click on it it's basically telling me that my current account is not within the university ecosystem. It's just making me wonder if I have successfully downloaded all my files ie. when my school removes access to my old OneDrive, will I lose this document? All my Word files that are currently on my new account were authored by my old account.

    Hi @yr

Typically, the files themselves are independent once transferred to your new OneDrive account.

You will be able to open them even if they were created by an old account and that account has been deleted.

I essentially just backed up my Desktop and Documents to another OneDrive account and took that as I've downloaded all my data and won't need my school's OneDrive account anymore.

Could you please how do you backup these files?

    • Did you copy the files from local school OneDrive folder, and paste into your new local OneDrive folder?
    • Or did you download these files of your school OneDrive account from OneDrive online, and then sync/upload to your new OneDrive?

Besides, does this prompt message shown in Word or other Office apps when you open other files?

Currently, I suggest you log in to OneDrive online with your new account, ensure that these files have been synchronized successfully, and check whether they can be opened and edited normally.

    • If your files are now stored there properly, they should still be available to you even after your old school account is deleted. Word prompts may be caused by confusion between different accounts.
    • Go to Word > File > Account, ensure your school account has been signed out of Office. Additionally, make sure your Office is not activated via your school account. User's image
    • Make sure the school account is unlinked within OneDrive settings, then your school OneDrive folder should disappear in Windows File Explorer.
    • I suggest you close all Office apps and OneDrive, go to Windows Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, then removed this school account that was in there by hitting Disconnect.
    • Please search and open Credential Manager, go to Windows Credentials > Generic Credentials, remove credentials which is related to this account for OneDrive or Office.
    • Go to Windows File Explore > enable hidden files/folders. Locate to C: > Users > <user-name> > AppData > Local > Microsoft, then delete "IdentityCache" folder. Then Go to the "OneAuth" folder, delete "blobs" and "accounts" folder. User's image
    • Reopen this document for a check.
