Why is MS word only allowing me to view documents not edit. I have purchased the software and cannot log in. Its saying I need admin permission.

Please provide us more context. We don't know what you mean by "log in". Are you trying to access a document on a Sharepoint site or something? If so then permissions are related to Sharepoint. If you cannot edit a specific document then the document could be locked. If you cannot edit any documents, including ones you created, then that is a problem with the software.
Please provide us context as to what you're doing. Screenshots would help. Also confirm whether it is specific documents or all documents and whether those documents are stored in Sharepoint or a related system.

Can you create a new blank document then edit it and save it? Please make sure your Office for Mac is activated successfully.
