We have 4 computers that save all our information on 1 computer that was call a server. There is only an excel file and a Sage file that we save on the server. This is so everyone can access the files and share them. The Server runs on Windows 10, the other mostly on Windows 11. Recently, 1 computer had an update and now cannot access the server. Windows security is asking to enter network credentials. We do not have this set up on the server. When we hit cancel we get this error....
\SERVER\shared.2024 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the Administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The user canceled the authentication prompt to a remote server.

    Hello Kent MacLeod,

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

1.You can try to sign out and sign in again, then check if you can access the shared files and folders.

2.Based on the description "Recently, 1 computer had an update and now cannot access the server. Windows security is asking to enter network credentials", do you mean it did not ask to enter network credential before you had this update? If so, you can try to uninstall this update or KBs number and check if it helps.

If it does not work above, here are a few potential solutions you can try.

    1. Verify Network Sharing Settings

Ensure that the network sharing settings are correctly configured on the server.

    1. On the server, go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings.
    2. Make sure "Network discovery" and "File and printer sharing" are turned on.
    3. Scroll down to "All Networks" and ensure "Password protected sharing" is turned off (since you mentioned not using network credentials).

    2. Check Folder Sharing Permissions

Ensure that the shared folder permissions on the server allow access for everyone (or the specific users).

    3. Delete and Recreate Credentials

On the client computer that's having the issue, you might need to clear any stored credentials.

    1. Go to "Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager".
    2. Under "Windows Credentials", look for any saved credentials for the server and remove them.
    3. Try to access the server again, and if prompted for credentials, use the appropriate ones or ensure the server does not require them.

    4. Ensure Same Workgroup.

    5. Network Reset

On the client computer, you might need to reset the network settings. Go to Settings > Network & Internet >Network reset.

    6. Update Network Drivers

Ensure that the network drivers are up-to-date on the client computer.

    7. Disable Windows Firewall

Temporarily disable the Windows Firewall to see if it's blocking access (although this should be done with caution and re-enabled afterward).

    8. Check for Windows Updates

Ensure that both the server and the client computers are running the latest Windows updates.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,

    Daisy Zhou
