Cannot save imported config when pressing Save in Azure VPN Client in ubuntu

Hi ,

I have set up an Azure P2S VPN with Entra ID, and it is working fine on a Windows system. However, I am facing an issue while importing the XML file on Ubuntu. I tried configuring it manually, but I am unable to save the settings. Can you please help me fix this issue? Is it related to the system or the client tool?

Please share us more details of the error like error code or screenshot so that we can see why you are unable to save the profile. Hope, you have connected the Ubuntu machine with admin privileges which allows you to save any settings

Now I am able to import the profile but getting this error message when trying to connect.

I have the same issue. Running the client from command line reports the error. It seems the client appends the config name to the path, uses a backslash for this instead of a forward slash and this is not escaped in the clients json config file (just a guess).

The error says that FormatException: Unrecognized string escape (at character 234).

Have you checked if the 234th character is not following syntaxt. It could be a space character added unknowingly. You can also validate the json format validity by using some online tools to correct the reported syntax issue

This error is internal and is not something invalid with the VPN profile (which is xml and doesnt contain file paths). This error is a bug in the VPN client in how it serializes/deserializes the list of saved profiles (which includes paths to them). \ is an escape character that the azure vpn cleint injected when building the path to the vpn profile. Unfortunately it should have been serialized as "...\\azurevpnconfig.xml" \a is the BEL (beep) character which is "Unrecognized".

It turns out that there was in fact a "" in the vpn profile xml filenames so disregard. I removed that from the filenames and profiles are saved and restored properly.

Thank you krutibasa majhi for sharing more details. From the screenshot provided, it shows that you are unable to establish the connection to azure VPN infrastructure.

Have you entered the credentials in the below step correctly?

VPN connection found failed, after the above step. Make sure that you are entering the credentials correctly

It's a good idea to check the diagnostic logs as indicated in the below article

You can also try to 'Remove' and re-create the vpn profile once smore

Also, the following command can be used to un-install the vpn client. After the un-installation, you can try re-installing again and try if it helps!

sudo apt remove microsoft-azurevpnclient
