I removed defender and now I can't download files in Edge.

After configuring the windows defender, windows defender apt, and windows defender smartscreen processes not to start by removing the execute permissions on the corresponding exe files, I am unable to download files in Edge.

When I try to download the file, I get the error message “Download failed. Virus scan failed.” I have configured Edge to not run Smartscreen scans, but that doesn't change anything.

Is it still possible to use the Edge file download function only when Defender-related software is running?

Re-enable just the core Windows Defender components needed for downloads:

    • Windows Defender SmartScreen
    • Windows Defender Antivirus Service

Once Defender and its components are functional, Edge downloads should work as expected.

    Alternatively, use a different browser.
