Guidance With Azure DMS Tool For Maria DB Database Migration

Hello,

I am currently working on a Database migration project migrating data from a MariaDB database hosted on AWS over to an Azure SQL DB as part of a cloud consolidation program using an IPsec VPN tunnel. While Azure Database for MariaDB would seem like the most suitable choice, Microsoft has announced that this service will be retired in 2025, the alternative is Azure MySQL DB however this is not supported by my client so I have selected a migration to an Azure SQL DB utilising the Azure Database Migration service.

We selected the following Migration Scenario option set-up as the source for the data to be migrated is Maria DB on an Amazon RDS instance however the section highlighted in red shows that only SQL Server can be the source:

If we specify MySQL as the Migration Scenario Source Server (as per the below), more source and target options are supported including AWS RDS which I believe best fits our scenario:

However this has has created a slightly different menu but still only gives the MySQL -> Azure Database for MySQL (sing/flex) as an option for my SQL

Any guidance that anyone can give me to confirm this migration is possible using Azure DMS and to ensure I select the correct options would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Best regards, Marc

Marc Hedgley Thank you for reaching out.

In response also to your comment in this post https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/2068303/guidance-with-mariadb-migration-to-azure

DMS and DMS(classic) are two different versions of Azure Database Migration service where DMS(classic) being the legacy option. Currently DMS or DMS (classic) does not support migration from MySQL to SQL Server. However, SSMA (SQL server Migration Assistance for MySQL) can be used for the MySQL to SQL Server migration.

     Refer: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/ssma/mysql/sql-server-migration-assistant-for-mysql-mysqltosql?view=sql-server-ver15

     Hope that helps.
