@alice alice, Microsoft documentation about Windows Installer provides information about the system component and is very helpful to understand how the installer works and what an .msi created by a Visual Studio Installer project contains.

In addition to the link posted by @Anna Xiu-MSFT documentation for the Visual Studio Installer extension can be found at Visual Studio Installer Deployment. Although this material is old it provides detailed information about using the extension that is still relevant.

Finally, there are utilities that can be installed with the Windows SDK that are very helpful if you are going to work with .msi files. I have found the Orca.exe editor to be an indispensable tool for understanding the .msi files created by a Visual Studio Installer project and solving installer project problems.
